Beach Testing
During the summer, North Shore Health Department conducts beach water quality testing in partnership with WI DNR, twice weekly (Mondays and Thursdays) from Memorial Day to Labor Day. NSHD tests Atwater, Big Bay, Klode, and Doctors Park beaches.
What we test for:
When NSHD Environmental Health Specialists and other NSHD staff test North Shore beaches, we are looking for levels of E. Coli. and total coliform
E. Coli is a type of Coliform found in feces which means the water may have fecal contamination and pose a risk of illness causing diarrhea, cramps, or other infections.
Total coliform is a bacterium commonly found in environmental microbes and are generally harmless, but their presence can signal the potential contamination of E, Coli.
