Medical Sharps Collection Program

North Shore Health Department is now a medical sharps collection site!

The voices of our communities matter- we heard your feedback and created this program from your needs!

If you have any medical sharps you need to dispose of, bring them to our office!

Improper disposal of sharps is illegal. Never put sharps in trash, recycling, toilet, or medication collection boxes.

Here are some things to know before bringing in your sharps:

  • Bring sharps in either a medical grade sharps bin or a laundry detergent container (with lid duck taped)

    • $5 drop off fee for any medical sharps bin not from NSHD or laundry detergent container

    • Please do not bring your sharps into our office in any other container besides the two options above

  • If you do not have a medical sharps container or laundry detergent bottle, we have medical sharps bins for low costs.

    • 0.25-gallon = $5

    • 1-gallon = $8

    • 2-gallon = $10

    • No drop off fee after purchasing container from NSHD

  • Limitations

    • 1 drop off per household per month (up to 2 gallons)

    • Commercial or institutional waste not accepted

  • Examples of sharps

    • Needles (including retractable)

    • Syringes

    • Lancets

    • Auto injectors (example: epinephrin pens)

    • Infusion sets

    • Connection needle sets used for home hemodialysis

Safe Disposal Options:

*NSHD is not a medication drop off location- see below for other options*

  • Drop-off at designated medical disposal boxes located at local police departments or pharmacies

    • Many North Shore police departments are permanent disposal sites

  • Participating in community drug take-back events (April & October)

  • Using mail-back programs or disposal kits available at some pharmacies

  • Reach out to North Shore Health Department to see if we have any safe disposal products to take home for your use

  • Stop by the free vending machine at Glendale City Hall to see what safe disposal items are available
